Our Produce Glamis Castle Highland Beef, Glenogilvy Lamb and Strathmore Outdoor Pork are all products sold by Strathmore Farmers Market Direct. Now Glamis Premium Bacon and Gammon are also available.
These high quality products are raised and finished by Strathmore Farming Company, which farms around Glamis in the Vale of Strathmore. Not only does this business produce cattle, sheep and pigs but cereals, potatoes and field vegetables are also grown on the farms.
While our Highland cattle can be seen in the grounds of Glamis Castle most are raised on the Sidlaw hills or on nearby conservation areas. The lambs are born and raised in Glenogilvy and surrounding area and brought down to the lower fields to finish. Duroc cross pigs are born and reared outdoors and finished in straw courts on high welfare systems. Both the livestock and arable enterprises are monitored by various quality assurance schemes to provide the customer with the knowledge that the products are safe and reared under welfare friendly systems. Meat is matured using traditional methods. |
The Environment Strathmore Farming Company participates in a range of environmental stewardship initiatives alongside its modern farming methods. As members of LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) it monitors its operations in an integrated farm management system.
On some of the farms there are owl boxes. We also encourage owls by creating beetle banks around our fields. This involves leaving a 6m wide uncultivated strip around cropped fields. Beetles and other insects live in these banks which provide food for small animals like voles. The voles in turn provide food for owls and other birds of prey. Over 20 km of hedges are managed with small birds in mind and alongside water margins buffer zones are set to minimise pollution risk and improve habitats. Higher up moorland management schemes help maintain a balance. |
